Euro 2020 Group Stages
The Euro 2020 group stages are well underway. England got off to a winning start on Sunday, beating Croatia 1-0 at Wembley.
Elsewhere, Wales clung on for a draw with Switzerland, and Italy thrashed Turkey on opening night. Romelu Lukaku, on the back of a brilliant season for Inter, got off to a flyer with a brace in Belgium’s 3-0 thumping of Russia.
England V Croatia
England V Croatia wasn’t the most entertaining game of the year. For England, though, it was an ideal start to the tournament. Gareth Southgate made several big calls. The areas of concern all delivered with Raheem Sterling, Kalvin Phillips and Tyrone Mings putting in excellent performances.
The start of the Euro 2020 group stages is the first time England have won their opening match at a European Championships. England were already favourites to win Group D. They should easily progress to the knockout rounds.
Phillips was England’s standout performer on Sunday. The Leeds midfielder was everywhere, picking out opponents and breaking up Croatian attacks. There was uncertainty about his role at this tournament, but he’s a guaranteed starter after his efforts at Wembley. Fittingly, Phillips was at the centre of the only goal of the game, getting the assist for Sterling’s winner.
There were bright moments for Mason Mount and Phil Foden. Despite the clamour for Jack Grealish, Southgate’s team selection worked out just fine. There is, however, still a question mark about left-back. Kieran Trippier’s one-footedness restricted England’s attack down that side of the pitch.
High-scoring matches are rare in tournament football. The Euro 2020 group stages are no different. England were solid defensively even without Harry Maguire, and standout displays from Phillips and Mings should cure some of Southgate’s most pressing selection dilemmas.
England V Scotland Prediction
Wembley will be rocking on June 18th. England and Scotland are in for a repeat of their Euro 96 clash.
Where England are among the tournament favourites, reaching the knockout rounds would be a success for Scotland. Steve Clarke has led the Scots to their first appearance at a major tournament since France 98.
This will probably be one-way traffic. England are obviously at a massive talent advantage, and where Southgate’s team could be vulnerable on the break, Scotland are limited in their attacking threat. Their most high-profile players are in the defensive third in Scott McTominay, Andy Robertson and Kieran Tierney.
It would be one of the shocks of the Euro 2020 group stages if Scotland avoid defeat. As ever when these sides meet, this could get heated, and the fans will make sure there’s a great atmosphere, but England should be able to control this match from start to finish.
England V Scotland Prediction: England 2-0 Scotland
Czech Republic V England Prediction
Depending on the outcome of the England V Scotland prediction, Southgate may opt to rotate in the final match of the Euro 2020 group stages. England will hope to have their qualification confirmed. Any opportunity to rest is invaluable on the back of such a gruelling season.
This England squad is not like previous tournaments. Southgate has brilliant depth. Even if he changes the entire XI, the hosts will be massively favoured at Wembley. They will be expected to win comfortably.
This could even be a chance for Southgate to experiment. Players like Grealish, Reece James and Jude Bellingham could stake their claim for a starting spot in the last 16.
The Czech Republic squad isn’t loaded with widely recognised names. West Ham duo Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal are the main Premier League representatives, while Bayer Leverkusen forward Patrik Schick leads the line.
Once again playing at Wembley, this should be the most relaxed match of the Euro 2020 group stages for the Three Lions faithful.
Czech Republic V England Prediction: Czech Republic 0-3 England
