Exciting Young Talent Expected To Shine At Euro 2020
Some of the world’s best young players are in action at Euro 2020. International tournaments are an opportunity for young talent to shine.
Euro 2020 is no different. There will be break through players. Some will come of age, while others will be setting the foundations for a career of international success.
From gifted teenagers on tournament favourites to key men on some of the underdogs, here are five young talents expected to shine at Euro 2020.
Jude Bellingham
Jude Bellingham is a star. The Dortmund midfielder isn’t just good for a 17-year-old. He’s already a calming presence in England’s midfield, an accomplished distributor and excellent reader of the game.
It’s a case of opportunity for the former Birmingham sensation. Gareth Southgate has other options to play alongside Declan Rice. Despite his Champions League experience and supreme talent, playing a 17-year-old with just five England caps in a major tournament is a risk.
If Bellingham gets sufficient minutes, he will shine this summer. Southgate showed he trusts the teenager by bringing him off the bench late on against Croatia – will he get the chance to start?
Kai Havertz
A turbulent first season in England ended with the greatest of glory for Kai Havertz. Fresh off scoring the Champions League final winning goal, the German forward is battling with fellow Chelsea star Timo Werner for a place in the XI at Euro 2020.
Germany aren’t among the Euro 2020 favourites. After banishing his veterans, Joachim Low has recalled Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels for the tournament, but this is still a very different squad from the one which fell in the group stages in 2018.
Havertz can do it all. After a difficult start in Chelsea blue, he hit form in the second half of the season, and could have a big role to play if Germany are to exceed their low expectations.
Adam Hlozek
Adam Hlozek is 18 years old. He was joint-top scorer in the Czech top flight. This isn’t a few weeks to gain experience – Hlozek is fighting for major Euro 2020 minutes in a Czech Republic team which is in good position after beating Scotland on Monday.
There’s no doubting how dangerous Hlozek is. He’s attracted attention from all over Europe. He scored four goals in just 23 minutes on the final day of the Czech season.
With seven league assists to his name too, Hlozek is a player to watch this summer, even if he’s limited to substitute appearances.
Alexander Isak
Alexander Isak shot to prominence as a teenager. He scored his first Sweden goal four years ago, becoming the youngest Sweden goal scorer of all-time.
The move to Borussia Dortmund did not work out as hoped, however, and Isak shifted from Germany to Spain and Real Sociedad.
Only five players scored more goals than Isak in La Liga this term. He finished the season with three goals in two matches.
While it’s been a wait for his breakout season, Isak isn’t 22 until September. Sweden will build their attack around him. Amid interest from Barcelona, this is an opportunity to set down a real marker alongside some of the world’s best.
Eljif Elmas
Having moved to Napoli for £15 million at just 19 years old, Eljif Elmas already has big-game experience.
He was a teenage phenom with Fenerbahce. Now playing in Serie A, Elmas is one of North Macedonia’s most important players as they embark on their first Euros campaign.
Elmas is still only 21. While he qualifies as a young player, he’s not lacking in experience, with 200 senior club matches under his belt.
Little is expected of North Macedonia at this summer’s tournament. The minnows put in a strong performance in their Euro 2020 opener against Austria, however, with Elmas playing all 90 minutes.
