Magic Weekend 2021
Castleford Tigers vs Salford Red Devil’s
In-game one of Magic Weekend 2021 at St James’s Park, Castleford Tigers took on Salford Red Devil’s. A game in which the Tigers had to win to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The opening 40 minutes saw the game become frantic with both teams exchanging tries. A late Oliver Holmes try sent Castleford into the break with a 16-12 lead.
The second half performance from Daryl Powell’s side would not have impressed the manager. Lots of unforced errors gave Salford a good field position. But a late try from Peter Mata’utia secured the all-important 29-18 victory for the Tigers.
St Helens vs Catalans Dragons
In the second game of the day, it was 1st vs 2nd as Catalans Dragons faced St Helens. What a game it proved to be.
The opening try from Catalans Sam Tomkins, set the standard. But Saints showed why they are back to back champions, with three unanswered tries. Coote, Makinson and Mata’utia gave the champions an 18-6 lead at the break.
Mata’utia’s second try was followed by a try from Catalans Julian Bousquet. With 10 minutes remaining Knowles crashed over for what looked like the winning try.
The Dragons found themselves 30-12 behind with five minutes remaining. Cue the comeback! Dean Whare went over in the corner before Gil Dudson reduced the deficit to six with 1.29 remaining.
As the final hooter sounded, Drinkwater kicked back towards the posts. Sam Kasiano rose highest to claim the ball and touchdown to send the game to golden point.
Saints thought they had won the game through Coote, but his drop goal went just wide. Up stepped James Maloney who made no mistake from 40 metres out, to win the game for Catalans. With that victory, the Dragons secured the League Leaders shield.
Leeds Rhinos vs Hull FC
The final game of Magic Weekend 2021 Day one, saw Leeds Rhinos face Hull FC. The game was a must-win for both sides.
The first half saw the game swing back and forth. Leeds raced into an 8-0 lead, before Hull scored 14 unanswered points. The Rhinos fought back to level the scores at 14-14. But a penalty from Sneyd gave FC the lead at half-time.
Another converted penalty and a Jake Connor try extended Hulls lead to 24-14. Just like the first half, the Rhinos came roaring back. Tries from Leeming and Broadbent sent the game to golden point.
On his third attempt, Leeming sealed a vital victory for Richard Agar’s side.
Castleford Tigers vs Wigan Warriors
These two sides are going in the opposite direction in the Betfred Super League table. Castleford is full of confidence with four straight wins, but the Warriors have lost their last three games.
What is more of a concern for Warriors fans is their side haven’t scored a try in two and a half games.
Going to The Mend-A-Hose Jungle is always a tough place to go, and with the side down on confidence, it is a big task to come away with the win.
Castleford Tigers vs Wigan Warriors Prediction: Castleford Tigers by 7
Following an enthralling opening day of Magic Weekend 2021, which saw two games go to golden point. Day two had a lot to live up to.
Huddersfield Giants vs Wakefield Trinity
With Willie Poaching now in charge at Wakefield, the team had won three out of the four games since he took over. The Giants on the other hand haven’t been able to maintain any consistency throughout the season and it showed in the game against Trinity.
Youngster Will Pryce gave Huddersfield the perfect start, but that was as good as it got for the Giants. After falling behind Wakefield replied with 14 unanswered points to lead 14-6 at the break. First-half tries from Tom Johnstone and Ryan Hampshire gave Trinity a deserved lead.
The second half continued in the same fashion. Kelepi Tanginoa and Reece Lynne extended the lead before Green sealed the 32-18 victory in the closing minutes.
Wigan Warriors vs Warrington Wolves
On day one we saw 1st vs 2nd it was now time for 3rd vs 4th.
But this game was not the exciting spectacle everyone expected. Warrington took an early lead through Josh Thewlis after Halsall misjudged the high kick. George Williams extended the Wolves lead with a try against his old club before Ethan Havard pulled one back for Wigan.
At the break Warrington lead 10-6 and that is how the scores remained at the final whistle. A second-half that remained scoreless saw a tough battle between the two sides. Wigan almost pulled themselves level after the hooter but the ball bounced in favour of the Wolves.
Leigh Centurions vs Hull Kingston Rovers
Rovers came into the game knowing nothing but a win was good enough to keep themselves in the playoff hunt. A dominant performance against the Centurions is what Tony Smith’s side produced.
It was Leigh’s Matty Russell who opened the scoring to shock the travelling Rovers fans. But late first-half tries from Ben Crooks and Albert Vete gave KR a 10-6 lead at half-time.
The second half was controlled from start to finish by KR in what turned out to be a comfortable 44-6 win.
