MLB Schedule August 2021 – Top Picks
The trade deadline is wrapped up. Eyes turn to the MLB schedule August 2021. Division and wildcard races are alive. There are pivotal series aplenty in the next few weeks, featuring World Series favourites and teams looking to make a run in the second half.
MLB Schedule August 2021
Some teams have faded, of course. Sellers at the deadline will look at the MLB schedule August 2021 as an opportunity to experiment with their roster, and perhaps give Major League experience to their prospects.
Contenders are desperate to string together series wins. Others need a bit more than that. Each win and loss counts the same, but the pressure is that much higher as the postseason approaches.
Let’s take a look at three standout series on the MLB schedule August 2021, starting with the reigning World Series winners…
Philadelphia Phillies vs Los Angeles Dodgers, August 10th-12th
With the Mets depleted, the Phillies have a real chance at winning the division. They have a 36.8% chance to make the playoffs as of August 4th. Their headline moves to add Kyle Gibson and Ian Kennedy should give them a notable boost.
Los Angeles got stronger at the deadline too, though, and they boast the second-best run differential on the road in MLB. Even while dealing with numerous absences, the Dodgers have a stacked roster on both sides of the ball. Philadelphia will likely face two of Max Scherzer, Julio Urias and Walker Buehler.
This is a series both teams need. The Phils have been much better at home than they have been on the road. They will still be underdogs against the Dodgers, but this could be a real springboard ahead of sweepable series against the Diamondbacks and Reds.
San Francisco Giants vs New York Mets, August 16th-18th
Two division leaders at the time of writing, the Giants and Mets matchup in north California between August 16th and 18th. This will have a major impact on the races in the National League West and East.
San Francisco landed Kris Bryant at the deadline, and the former MVP had an instant impact. New York also swung a deal with the Cubs. Javier Baez arrived, as did Trevor Williams, following Rich Hill into the home clubhouse at Citi Field.
Both of these teams got better. Yet, both are under massive pressure down the stretch.
The Mets are being pursued by the Phillies and Braves, and are currently without Francisco Lindor, Jacob deGrom, Joey Lucchesi and Noah Syndergaard. The Giants are being chased down by the Dodgers, and have a tough MLB schedule August 2021.
This is a well-matched series at Oracle Park and serves as a preview for their three-game set in the Big Apple just a few days later.
New York Yankees vs Boston Red Sox, August 17th-18th
The Yankees went for it at the deadline. New York landed Joey Gallo, Anthony Rizzo and Andrew Heaney, and they clearly believe they can still make the playoffs. Every game is key for the Bronx Bombers, but there’s extra importance on every matchup with the Red Sox and Rays.
Boston was more conversative, making minor bullpen additions and trading for Kyle Schwarber. Chris Sale isn’t far from returning, however, and he could be back in time to throw a few innings in this showdown with the Yankees in mid-August.
Sitting 10th in run differential, the Red Sox have long been a candidate to regress. With some of their hitters cooling off, they have slipped into second and already lost ground to the Yankees.
It’s hard not to favour New York in this series. This offence is impossible to keep quiet even if the pitching remains suspect. Check out the complete MLB schedule August 2021 here.
